Waterfowl Hunting in Uruguay - THe Best Duck Hunting
in South America

Several times per week our phone rings with a new caller we have never heard from before requesting more information about our Uruguay Bird Hunting trips. This is great news for us because several years ago when we asked callers to consider duck hunting in Uruguay as a possibility, they listened, but shrugged it off after a few minutes, preferring to joing the ranks of their friends who had just returned from hunting in Argentina.

So it took a while, but now the legendary Uruguay duck hunting is a well-known resource among waterfowl hunting circles who travel internationally, and for good reason, duck hunting in Uruguay offers some of the most exciting and consistent wild duck shooting over decoys found anywhere in the world.

First, you need to get down here, and the good news is that it is now easier than ever to travel to Uruguay. The government in Uruguay is friendly, and democratic, making it a "firearms friendly" country--socialist approches to gun control are a not a part of daily life in Uruguay.

Additionally, Uruguay is pro-American, and pro-hunting, evidenced by the long hunting seasons and liberal limits. In fact, duck hunting in Uruguay is one of the only types of hunting that is restricted by a season, or a limit.

Only Periz hunting (an upland game bird similar to a quail) is likewise restricted, and there is NO SEASON and no limit on doves and pigeons.

They are considered pests, and the wildlife department places no limit on how many of them one can harvest-it's open season on "palomas", which is Spanish for dove and/or pigeons. Pigeons are referred to as "palomas grandes"--big doves...

Back to Uruguay duck hunting...the season is a long one, stretching from the first of May until mid September. No part of the season should be labeled as the "best" because ducks are fickle animals--and duck hunting Uruguay is no exception--so trying to time the migration is a sucker play...but we can say this: a bad day of Uruguay duck hunting would be a thirty to forty bird day--try doing that back home or at an expensive duck lease in Arkansas or Louisiana!

A Field Guide to Duck Hunting Uruguay

In addition to shooting liberal limits of birds, duck hunting in Uruguay is a treat in the sense that the overall experience of this Uruguay bird hunting trip is akin to taking a step back in time where one would simply go door to door, from one country farmhouse to another, asking for permission to shoot those "pesky" ducks that were dining in one of the farmers' rice fields--and here, that permission is still granted to anyone who shows up with a smile and a small offer of kindness.

The best of the best of duck hunting is still alive and well here in the 2000's in Uruguay, and no other outfitter offers a duck hunt as traditional, and comprehensive as Los Gauchos. We keeps groups small and private, our competitors load 12 to 18 hunters in small buses and drive long distances to the field only to find themselves 'party shooting' at incoming birds.

One of our recent clients described Uruguay duck hunting with one of our competitors like this:

"it was like going out bottom fishing on a party barge in Soth Florida. I could not shoot more than 20 feet to my left or right without risking life or limb. Every duck that came in was shot by literally five hunters--it was not the pure and unadulterated Uruguay duck hunting experience that I was promised. I was just a number."

Los Gauchos caters to private parties of six hunters per week, and we will never crowd you with other clients. We appreciate the time and money that you have invested in your Uruguay bird hunting trip, and we will not disappoint you by putting you in a blind with 5 of your closest friends.
